A First Time Homebuyer is defined by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) as someone who has never owned a home OR someone who hasn’t owned a home in the past three (3) years. For
married couples, if one partner has never owned a home before, they would be considered First Time Home Buyers. The FHA promotes homeownership by offering financial programs to encourage home purchases by individuals who are not currently homeowners. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) www.portal.hud.gov through the FHA is tasked with building and promoting healthy neighborhoods and to promote, maintain, and expand opportunities for homeownership.
